The Second Annual KAOS State Adventure Weekend will be held August 23-25, 2019 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This unique program teaches students who are blind or vision impaired, along with their families, how to safely kayak as a family activity. This weekend adventure is available to any student ages 8-18 years living in Pennsylvania who are blind or vision impaired along with their families. During the 2018 event, a total of 53 participants attended; the weekend was filled with fun, excitement, and millions of smiles! We know that you will have just as much fun this summer.
This year’s event will take advantage of the large variety of lakes and streams in the Lancaster area, offering a broader offering to participants. New for this year’s event is a choice of adventure. You can explore a lake (such as Gifford Pinchot Lake) or run a beautiful local stream (like Swatara Creek or the Conestoga River. Team River Runner staff will provide all training and equipment, safety boaters, and support teams, always keeping safety number one.
There is no cost for the kayak lessons, use of gear or the river trip. However, there is a fee involved that includes one night lodging, five meals and the use of the facilities. The costs are as follows:
- KAOS Family: $150.00
- Volunteers: Costs will be covered by Team River Runner
Lancaster’s Church of the Apostles is providing access to its extensive properties as our base of operations. Overnight accommodations will be either group camping near the pavilion and burbling brook or cot-camping inside the church facility. The church provides accessible restrooms and showers, classroom and meeting space.
Activities begin at noon Friday, August 23rd and will consist of meeting your guide training team, equipment fitting, kayak skills instruction, basic paddler safety training, guide skills training, and so forth.
Saturday, August 24th you will go to either the lake or stream adventure you chose and have an awesome day on the water. This will be a big day of paddling, getting out of the boats to explore the banks, playing fun water games, and cementing new friendships.
