Travis, a combat-blinded U.S. Army Vet, shows Chase the parts of his boat. Chase, a veteran OuttaSight kayaker in his own right, teaches Travis how to have fun.

Our unique program pairs Veterans and local kayak instructors with students who are blind or vision impaired, along with their families. Everyone teams up, under the mentorship of Veteran expert kayakers who are blind or have low-vision, to learn how to safely kayak as a family activity.

This year’s event will take advantage of the large variety of lakes and streams in the Lancaster area, offering a broader offering to participants. Team River Runner staff will provide all training and equipment, safety boaters, and support teams, always keeping safety number one.

There is no cost for the kayak lessons, use of gear or the river trip.

Lancaster’s Church of the Apostles  is providing access to its extensive properties as our base of operations. Overnight accommodations will be either group camping near the pavilion and burbling brook or cot-camping inside the church facility. The church provides accessible restrooms and showers, classroom and meeting space.

Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 12th with our first group meeting at noon. There, you will meet your guide training team, begin equipment fitting, learn some basic kayak skills (a.k.a. “ground school”), basic paddler safety training, guide skills training, and so forth. We’ll move to a local on-water training site to practice our skills under supervision.

2019’s event was a Blast! Notice the crocodile…it was that kind of day.

Friday night we will have a campfire adventure program on site, make s’mores, and strengthen our friendships.

Saturday, August 13th we will all go to the location for our adventure and have an awesome day on the water. This will be a big day of paddling, getting out of the boats to explore the banks, playing fun water games, and just having as much fun as possible. Sunday we’ll clean and organize our gear, pack up to go home, and do a fun service project for our host facility.
